Copyright infringement in the digital world
As creatives, we’re inspired by the world around us, but it’s crucial to remember that copyright laws protect the original works of artists everywhere.
Creating stunning 3D renders of real-world artworks or designs might seem harmless, but it can lead to serious copyright infringement issues, especially if you try to sell on those works as downloads for animation or 3D printing. Not only could you face legal consequences, but it also undermines the hard work and talent of the original creators.
I’m posting this because in the last week, I’ve found a few 3D artist selling digital renders of my bugs and have had to issue DMCA takedowns. I don’t usually go looking for this kind of thing but found them by accident as I occasionally dabble in the world of Blender and 3D Max. It’s such a pain! I don’t mind people using my work for personal use and inspiration but they were pretty much like for like!
If you are inspired by someone else's work, consider collaborating, seek permission or just create something uniquely your own. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery but it really doesn’t feel that way 🙁
